Root canal treatment

Tooth saving therapy.

The pulp is the inner part of the tooth and filled with blood vessels and nerves. If this becomes infected due to bacteria entering through a deep filling, a crack or tooth decay, it can cause a pain, sensitivity or the formation of an abscess. Root canal treatment (or endodontics) can prevent the infection from spreading and help save a tooth from extraction.

Our dentists use special techniques and instruments to carry out root canal therapy. This is often thought of as being a painful treatment, but as it is carried out under a local anaesthetic, it is usually very similar to having a normal filling.

After removing the infected area, the root canals are flushed clean with an anti-bacterial solution and then filled. To keep the treated tooth protected, a temporary filling is put in place and later checked for any remaining infection. When the tooth is fully free from infection, it will be permanently filled. As root canal treatment requires skill and precision to perform, it will usually require two or more visits.
