Jaw problems

Lining up your bite.

If your upper and lower teeth do not fit together properly, it can cause problems for your teeth and gums, your temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) and your facial muscles. TMJ disorder can also lead to clenching of the jaw and grinding of the teeth while you sleep. This can cause facial pain, headaches, clicking when chewing, as well as pain in the neck, shoulder or back.

If you think you may have a problem, your dentist may be able to treat you or refer you to a specialist. Treatment can include wearing a custom-made appliance which relaxes the jaw muscles by keeping your teeth in a specific position and also helps to prevent tooth wear. Other solutions include:

  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Maxillofacial surgery
  • Replacement of any missing teeth
  • Rectifying badly fitting bridgework
