Inlay & Onlays

For long-lasting repairs.

Inlays and onlays are hard-wearing restorations created in a laboratory and used to fill cavities that may be too large to repair with a normal filling. An inlay is placed within a cavity, whereas an onlay covers more of the biting surface of the tooth. Inlays and onlays can be made from materials, such as porcelain and composite, to give a natural-looking result. Gold can also be used as it is such a hard-wearing, easily shaped metal but it is generally only used in the back teeth.

Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and these are used by a dental technician to create tailor-made inlays or onlays. To protect the prepared tooth while you wait for your restoration, a temporary filling will be placed in the cavity. When ready, your inlay or onlay will be fixed firmly in place with a dental adhesive.

Inlays and onlays can be designed and produced in just one visit using an innovative CEREC in-surgery milling machine. This reduces the number of appointments and eliminates the need for a temporary restoration.
